TRUE FOB™ University: Transit Testing Standards
1. Testing Purpose
The intent of the transit testing protocol is to ensure all packaging attains the quality necessary to safely and efficiently survive the TRUE FOB™ supply chain. The purpose is to pinpoint deficiencies in package quality and design, based on hazards observed and ISTA (International Safe Transit Association) testing protocols.
2. Testing Overview
- Based on ISTA 2C and 3B guidelines.
- Must pass all tests before shipment authorization.
- Testing must be performed in this order:
- Hand Truck Test
- Walk Test
- Push/Pull Test
- Free-Fall Drop Test
- Full Rotational Drop Test
3. Testing Protocol Details
3.1 Hand Truck Test
Goal: Test carton structural integrity while being moved by hand truck.
Protocol: Stack cartons higher than the hand truck, move 15 feet. Bottom carton must not collapse or break.
Alternate Method: Stack on 18"x6" platform if no hand truck is available.
3.2 Walk Test
Goal: Simulate rocking movement during handling. Walk carton 15 feet on its end, use most fragile corner.
3.3 Push/Pull Test
Goal: Simulate dragging. Push or pull carton 15 feet horizontally. Tape must stay sealed or remain unsealed if broken during test.
3.4 Free-Fall Drop Test
Goal: Simulate drops during handling. Drop freely to ground, using most fragile corner. Follow ISTA 2C Level 1 or Level 3 depending on weight.
3.5 Full Rotational Drop
Goal: Simulate carton tipping over face-forward. Follow ISTA 3B.
4. Preventing Over Packaging Costs
Start with recommended materials. Re-test with lighter materials until damage occurs. Use the last successful design to optimize cost and protection.
5. Testing Pass/Fail Criteria
- Failure: Any product physical or cosmetic damage.
- Pass: Packaging damage is allowed if product is undamaged and all parts are contained.
6. Retesting Requirements
If product damage occurs after passing, redesign and re-test at a 3rd party accredited lab.
Full Transit Test Protocols:
- Atmospheric Conditioning: 38°C ± 2°C, 85% ± 5% humidity for 24 hours
- Road Vibration Under Load: ISTA 2C Level 2 random vibration profile (no rotary vibration)
- Hand Truck Test
- Walk Test
- Free-Fall Drop Test
- Push/Pull Test
- Free-Fall Drop Test again
- Full Rotational Drop Test
Note: TRUE FOB™ pays for the 1st lab test. Supplier must pay for re-tests if the first fails.
