Adult Bed Construction Requirements

Learn the TRUE FOB™ certified standards for adult bed manufacturing. These standards ensure strength, durability, and excellent customer satisfaction.

1. Bed Cavity Dimensions

  • Twin: 39" x 77"
  • Full: 54" x 77"
  • Queen: 61" x 82"
  • King: 77" x 82"
  • California King: 73" x 86"
  • Width: Measured inside rail to inside rail.
  • Length: Measured inside headboard to inside footboard.
  • Measure from furthest points if headboard/footboard protrudes (e.g., sleigh bed).

2. Headboard & Footboard Mounting

  • Anchored barrel nuts and bolts pre-installed in headboard/footboard leg posts (fig1).
  • 4mm Allen bolts extend 1/4" from leg posts.
  • Stretcher between headboard legs required for rigidity (fig2).
  • Stretchers secured with at least one metal-to-metal fastener; dowels may assist (fig3).
  • Cleat height (high position) must be within 355mm from bottom of headboard panel (fig4).

3. Adjustable Base Compatibility

  • Footboard interior must be completely flush to frame.
  • No lip or obstruction to catch adjustable bases.

4. Siderail Construction

  • 7-ply plywood or better unless otherwise authorized.
  • One continuous piece — no seams allowed.
  • Top and bottom edges must be filled, sanded, and finished.

5. Siderail Cleat Construction

  • Solid wood cleats, minimum 30mm x 30mm (fig5).
  • Mounted 90mm from each rail end (fig 6) .
  • Installed with glue and screws, screws spaced no more than 300mm apart (fig 7).
  • Supported with 6 metal L-brackets (3 per side) (fig 8).
  • Cleats reversible for high/low mattress positions; 38mm slat-to-rail spacing in high position (fig 9).

6. Slat Placement

  • 5 evenly spaced slats per bed.
  • Slat placement indicators fastened to cleats.

7. Mounting Brackets

  • Pre-installed reversible L-brackets on siderails.
  • Mount 1mm from rail end, flush with headboard and footboard.
  • 2 machine bolts + 4 wood screws to secure each bracket.
  • Rails wider than 10" require brackets with 3 open slotted hooks.

8. Slat Material Composition

  • Only kiln-dried solid wood or plywood allowed.
  • No MDF, particle board, or OSB.
  • Minimum 75mm wide, 18mm thick slats.
  • Finger joints allowed only for hardwood slats, must be offset.

9. Slat Installation

  • Slats attached using wood screws or metal-to-metal fasteners.
  • Pre-drilled installation holes required at ends of slats.
  • Slats stamped "TOP" on upper side.
  • Queen: 1 support leg per slat. King: 2 support legs per slat, 9" off center.

10. Slat Support Legs

  • Two-part legs (primary + add-on) for Hi/Low cleat positions.
  • Primary support legs: 38mm diameter with leveler glides.
  • 3mm gap from adjustable glide to floor when fully installed.
  • Support legs labeled with vendor code & style number.

11. Slat Roll and Center Rails

  • Slat rolls require center support rails securely attached to headboard/footboard.
  • Queen: 1 center rail with 5 legs. King: 2 center rails with 5 legs each, spaced 9" off center.

12. Upholstery Appearance Standards

  • Covers clean, free of stains, scratches, holes.
  • Consistent dye lot/color across panels.
  • Loose threads trimmed. Tight, uniform seams and welts.
  • Coated tack strips. Straight nailhead trim.
  • No sharp staples, nails, or frame components felt through cover.

13. Final QC Checklist

  • ✅ Proper cavity dimensions verified.
  • ✅ Mounting hardware and cleats installed correctly.
  • ✅ Siderails one-piece, filled and sanded.
  • ✅ Cleats mounted, reversible, and supported by brackets.
  • ✅ Slats properly installed with support legs and labels.
  • ✅ Center support rails with correct number of legs installed.
  • ✅ Upholstery clean, seams straight, no exposed hardware.
